Directions: You are writing a “Why Can’t I” poem. This is about you speaking to something in the world you want to do or can not. You can also speak to power and to the barriers that may get in your way. You could also rail against the physical world and write fantastical poems about escaping gravity or having magic powers.

The goal is to simply question, “Why Can’t I?”

Start with a powerful line and use action words to describe the “the thing you can’t do

Example:

  • Why can’t I dance in school?
  • Better: Why can’t my toes tap against my desk as I twirl and whirl through the school day?

Compare the two lines above. They both share a “Why Can’t I statement” What vivid verbs and action words were used in the second line.

Why can’t I

I wonder

I (would/don’t) hear

I (would/don’t) want

I am

I pretent

I (would/don’t) feel

I (would/don’t) touch

I (would/don’t) I worry

I am

Stanza Three

Why can’t I

Who stops me

How do they stop me

Why do they stop me

What will I do

I am

Example Organizer

Stanza One

Why can’t I

Why can’t my toes tap against my desk as I twirl and whirl through the school day

I wonder

What lessons my feet would teach

I (would/don’t) hear

I would hear the rhythm of rhyme in answers so sweet

I (would/don’t) see

As I watch my peers perform Pas a Deux Pas de Deux

I (would/don’t) want

Want to simply solve two plus two but tap it out with my shoe

I am

A dancer, glued to a seat

Stanza Two

Why can’t I

Why can’t my toes tap against my desk as I twirl and whirl through the school day

I pretend

As she drones on, my mind is gone, dreaming of choreography

I (would/don’t) feel

I feel movements escaping me

I (would/don’t) touch

The sky with fluid movements

I (would/don’t) I worry

I will never be free from these neatly placed rows. Ballerinas bound by rules

I am

trapped

Stanza Three

Why can’t I

Why can’t my toes tap against my desk as I twirl and whirl through the school day

Who stops me

Adults around me, wardens who squash wonder

How do they stop me

Carving out rules of schools as prisons encompassing my hips, locking our feet

Why do they stop me

Letting education destroy my learning

What will I do

I am yearning to let my feet seep into time

I am

A dancer

Example Poem

Why can’t my toes tap against my desk as I twirl and whirl through the school day
I wonder what lessons my feet would teach
I would hear the rhythm of rhyme in answers so sweet
As I watch my peers perform Pas a Deux
I wouldn’t want to simply solve two plus two but tap it out with my shoe
I am a dancer glued to a seat

Why can’t my toes tap against my desk as I twirl and whirl through the school day
I pretend As she drones on, my mind is gone, dreaming of choreography
I feel movement escaping me
I would touch sky with fluid movements as my moves fall in upwards rain
I will never be free from these neatly placed rows. Ballerinas bound by rules
I am trapped

Why can’t my toes tap against my desk as I twirl and whirl through the school day
Adults around me, wardens who squash wonder
Carving out rules of schools as prisons encompassing my hips, locking our fee
Letting education destroy my learning
I am a dancer
